COGIC MOURNS THE PASSING OF THE FOUNDER’S DAUGHTER
This afternoon, Mason legacy family member, Evangelist Missionary Jennifer Patterson Hill, announced the transition of our beloved Mrs. Ruth Mason Lewis, the last remaining child of Bishop Charles Harrison Mason, the founder of the Church of God in Christ.
Mrs. Lewis was the youngest of six children, born on September 16, 1920, to Bishop Mason and Lelia Washington Mason. In 1948, she married R.S. Lewis Jr., of the historic R.S. Lewis and Sons Funeral Home, and their 64 year union produced a son and daughter. Many may not know that after civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Memphis, his body was taken to R.S. Lewis and Sons for embalming and repair.
A Memphis treasure and pioneer, Ruth Mason Lewis helped to change the eating habits of children throughout Memphis and Shelby County as a nutritionist for Head Start for decades, setting about to make vegetables and more healthy choices palatable for youngsters.
Mrs. Lewis was a member of Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ serving on the Mother’s Board. She was also a member of The Links, The National Smart Set, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Ruth Mason Lewis was 95 years old. Our prayers are with the entire Mason and Lewis families. More information is forthcoming.
